New College Stamford recently opened its new Construction Centre. The Centre was officially opened on Friday 16th January 2009 by Bill Newton Dunn, East Midlands MEP and attended by Stamford LibDem Mayor, Cllr Maureen Jalili and LibDem PPC Cllr Harrish Bisnauthsing. Bill gave an extremely interesting talk on the current economic climate and the need for skills within the EU. This is part of the enlargement of New College Stamford which will also see the first eco-designed college to be built in the UK. New College Stamford works closely with Stamford Town Council who have welcomed the prospect of the increased student numbers, courses and staff which are being introduced by Principal Miles Dibsdall.

Cllr Maureen Jalili, LibDem Mayor of Stamford is currently working on a 'Living Archive for Stamford'. This will consist of recordings of local people, of all ages, recording their memories and impressions of Stamford so that these can be captured as 'moments in time' and used to supplement the variety of tools and materials available to visitors to the Town Hall. She is particularly anxious to include schoolchildren of all ages to take part in this initiative so that, in years to come, youngsters will be able to take part. Please contact Cllr Jalili on maj@uk2.net or by telephone (01780 755955)

Grantham & Stamford LibDems recent Charity Dinner for the Motor Neurone Disease Ass. was a resounding success. Lembit was an absolutely inspiring and energising speaker. The evening was a sell out and we were privileged to have Gordon Hickmore, President of the Lincs Branch of MNDA , joining us with 24 members and friends and members of the Grantham based NHS Outreach Team. Gordon told us that the association is a bit thin on the ground in the south of the county and that he hoped that the publicity in the media will raise awareness and help promote the cause. If this happens then the evening will have been an even bigger success. Before moving on to the evening itself, we would like to express our great gratitude to Phil Feminille at Fratellis at The Angel Hotel for his great patience in the run up to the evening and also for his great generosity. We had a magnificent meal and the staff were fantastic.

Congratulations to Cnllr Sue Wooley (Conservative) on winning the by-election. Our campaign team, although disappointed with the turn out, were pleased that the LibDem vote had caught up with Labour in Bourne Abbey and feel confident that in 2009 the Liberal Democrats will be the main opposition to the Conservatives. We also congratulate our candidate, Peter Morris, for getting out THREE deliveries campaigning on local issues. Great news - we picked up two new members in Bourne during the campaign.
